Betty Nailor Day, 89, died Friday, August 30, 2019, at “Carolyn House,” Hospice of Central PA, following an extended illness that included six years in various personal care homes and an additional seven years in a skilled nursing facility.
Betty was born in Carlisle, PA on March 28, 1930, the daughter of Leroy David and Anna Mae (Miller) Nailor. She attended Pleasant Hall Grade School, where she completed the eighth grade before being required to return to full-time work on the family farm. She later studied at the Carlisle Commercial College, where she developed secretarial skills that allowed her eventually to become Manager of the Personnel Department and Executive Secretary to the President at Reeves-Hoffman Division, an electronics corporation. She was a devoted member of the former Grace United Methodist Church now the Carlisle United Methodist Church.
Betty met the love of her life, Gerald Q. (Jerry) Day, while working at Reeves-Hoffman. The couple married on Betty’s birthday in 1963 and remained happily married until Jerry’s death in December 1998.
Betty is survived by her son Gerald L. (Jerry) Day, his spouse Kathleen Austin and grandson, Aiden Austin-Day, all living in Toronto, Canada. She is also survived by Randal Rhoades of Mechanicsburg, PA, her son from a previous marriage and his family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was predeceased by six siblings: Nelson, Vernon, Irvin Nailor, Evelyn Negley, Dorothy Keck and Martha Mountz.
The immediate family will have a private viewing at Hoffman Funeral and Crematory 2020 Trindle Road Carlisle, PA on Thursday morning, September 5, 2019. Following will be an informal graveside gathering shortly thereafter at the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens in Carlisle.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials in Betty’s name to be made to the Hospice of Central PA, (http://hospiceofcentralpa.org/index.php/service/carolyns-house.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013.
