Betty L. Thrush, 80 of Carlisle, died Friday September 23, 2011 in the Life Care Hospital, Mechanicsburg.
Born January 24, 1931 in Carlisle, the daughter of the late Jerry W. and Martha G. Wickard Horn and the widow of Glenn Thrush.
Betty was a life member of Dickinson Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher for 53 years. She served on the pastor nominate committee and the Cumberland County Sunday School Association. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Association, Life member of Bonny Brook Riding Club, Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company and a Life Member of Girl Scouts USA, started her scouting career in 1951 as an adult! During that time she has worn almost every hat imaginable Troop Leader, Great Beaver Day Camp Volunteer, Service Unit Consultant, Service Unit Treasurer, Nominating Chair, Service Unit Delegate, Service Unit Director, and member of the service unit recognition committee. She attended Girl Scout Training at MACY in New York, served as council delegate for the 1953 National Girl Scout Convention in Cincinnati, OH, and she has visited the International Girl Scout Center, Our Cabana in Mexico. For her outstanding service to Girl Scouting, the council awarded Betty the Thanks Badge. Betty has been active with 4-H, N. Dickinson PTA, and volunteered for Boy Scouts. She and her husband were charter members of the Whirl Aways Square Dance Group, and they served in Mexico as a member of President Carters’ International Friendship Force.
Surviving are three daughters, Betsy Smith and her husband Carl, Carlisle, Debra Zeigler and her companion Patrick Binger, Carlisle and Margy Thrush and her companion Douglas Weigle, Carlisle, two sons, Floyd Thrush, Newville and Jerry Thrush and his wife Lisa, Lancaster, three grandchildren, Justin Smith and his companion, Shelly Wise, Carlisle, Heidi Thrush, Lititz and Jeremy Thrush, Lancaster, two great-grandchildren, Zachary Smith, Carlisle and Jakob Martin, Lititz, a brother, Floyd Horn and his wife Connie, Carlisle and a sister, Faye Hurley and her husband Wilson, Carlisle. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday September 30, 2011 in the Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle. Burial will be held at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. There will be a viewing from 6:00 – 9:00 pm Thursday in the funeral home and also 9:00 am Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
