Chief Hospital Corpsman (Ret) Barry R. Bender, 71, of Dillsburg, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2019 at his residence.
He was born January 6, 1948 in Carlisle to the late Lester Richard and Beulah (Dick) Bender.
Barry was a graduate of Carlisle High School where he was a member of the 1967 undefeated football team. He honorably served his country in the US Navy for 20 years followed by 25 years of federal service including 14 years as the University Safety Officer at USUHS. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of American Legion Post #674, and was commander of the Dillsburg Purple Hearts. Barry was also a member of VFW Post 7343 where he served as quartermaster for three years and was recently appointed as a member of the Military Order of the Cootie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Deborah R. of Dillsburg; three children, Brianne, Stephen (wife Amanda), and Samuel (wife Rachel); one granddaughter, Claire; and two yorkies, Gus and Gracie; one sister; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013 with Pastor Dick Warner officiating. Burial will follow in Letort Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Barry to VFW Post 7343, 424 North Walnut Street Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065.
