Barbara Lee Roddis Hervey

Barbara Lee Roddis Hervey died on Sunday, May 26, 2013 in her home. She was 72, born on August 11, 1940. She believed in the unified God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and her soul is in His Care.
Barb is survived by her husband of 50+ years Bob, of Mechanicsburg, her son David and his wife Roxane, her dear granddaughter Jenny, all of Carlisle, and her sister Mary Ann Kleber of Naples, FL. Barb was predeceased by her parents, Ione and Eldon Roddis of Rochester, MN, by her daughter Jennifer Sue and her brother David of Naples, FL.
Barbara was born in Jacksonville, FL. The family moved to Rochester, MN when she was two years old and she was raised there. As a kid, she learned to swim and was always in the water, either at the Soldier Field pool or the Mississippi River at Lake Pepin, where her dad kept a cruiser. She had then, and now, a large group of school girlfriends. Those girls have regularly corresponded and met frequently in various parts of the country and in Rochester. Barb graduated from Rochester High School in 1958 and from the University of Minnesota in 1962 with a teaching degree in physical education. While at the University of Minnesota, she was a proud member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.
A week after she graduated from college, she married Bob in Rochester. They then embarked on a 30 year adventure as Bob pursued a career in the US Army. They lived and served overseas in France (4 years) and Turkey (6 years). In the USA, they were posted to Ft. Monmouth, NJ, Norfolk, VA, Salt Lake City, UT, Ft. Gordon, GA, Ft. Ord, CA, Northern Virginia while Bob worked in the Pentagon, and finally at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, PA. While Bob served in Vietnam for two years, Barb lived at home in Rochester. Barb and Bob were blessed with two great kids, David and Jennifer. The kids were dragged all over the world and the USA, moving some fourteen times in 23 years. Jennifer's death in 1995 was and is the great tragedy in their lives. David went on to a successful 23 year career in the Air Force and is now militarily retired and working in Carlisle.
After Bob's military retirement, Barb and Bob decided to settle in Carlisle. They lived there for 26 years until moving to Mechanicsburg some two years ago.
Barb loved to travel. Recent overseas trips were taken to France (twice), Italy, Scandinavia and Russia. Domestic travel included San Diego and Napa, CA and Phoenix, AZ, Hilton Head, SC, Florida, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Northern Michigan. She was a "beach" person and every year she spent time at Lewes, DE, often times in a tent, most recently with her granddaughter, Jenny. She and Bob were excellent skiers and made multiple trips to many of the premier ski areas in the Western US. Barb loved playing bridge. She was a member of at least six regular bridge groups and would still play anytime and anywhere that cards were available. She was an audacious bidder, often leaving her partner breathless when the cards were exposed.
She deeply loved Second Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, where she served as a Deacon, was a member of Circle, of the Presbyterian Women, and helped with the Whale of a Sale and Vacation Bible School. She also was a member of the Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) at Carlisle Barracks for almost 30 years. She was a longtime member of the Carlisle Newcomer Club.
Wherever Barb went she accumulated the richest commodity of all, friends. She nurtured and treasured her friends, old and new. And in turn, they have shown enormous compassion and caring for Barbara during her illness. The entire family is very grateful.
Barbara's cancer care was entrusted to the doctors and staff of Carlisle Cancer Center and to the hospice care of Celtic Healthcare. Again, the family is most grateful.
A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013. Pastors Jeff Gibelius and Jennifer McKenna will officiate. A repast service will follow the service in the rotunda.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Barb's name may be offered to the Memorial Fund, Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013.
