Arturo Angel Fox
2 August 1935-6 November 2014
Arturo A. Fox, Emeritus Professor of Spanish at Dickinson College, epitomized brilliance, dignity, and determination throughout his eventful life.
He was the only child of Arturo Roberto Fox and Dulce María Macle , born in Holguín, Cuba. He earned a diploma of Letters and Science from Escuela Los Amigos, 1952, and an LL.D from the University of Havana in 1960. He began practicing law with his father, having married Rosa del Carmen Portilla in 1959, and they had two children: Franz and Alexandra.
In 1962 he and his young family fled Castro Cuba and began a new life in the United States. As refugees they were relocated to Clinton, IA, through the kindness of a Methodist congregation. Eventually Arturo acquired a one-semester position in the Spanish Department at Luther College in Dekora, IA, that developed into a permanent appointment that he held 1963-1966. He also matriculated in graduate studies in Spanish Literature with a minor in Latin American Studies at the University of Minnesota, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1968.
Carlisle became his permanent when he began as Assistant Professor of Spanish at Dickinson College, 1966-72. He became Associate Professor, 1972- 79; Professor, 1979-98; Chairman of the Department of Modern Languages, 1972-74; Chairman of the Department of Spanish and Italian, 1978-79; Chairman of the Department of Spanish, 1981-84 and 1990-93; Coordinator of the Latin American Studies Program, 1968-77; Director of the Semester Program of the Central PA Consortium in Colombia, 1977-78; Director of Dickinson in Málaga, Spain, 1985-86, 1988-90, 1993-95; and was appointed the William W. Edel Professor of Humanities and Honorary Chair, 1992.
He authored a novel, a book on literary criticism, and three Spanish textbooks. The last one went through four editions in 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2011. He was a prolific publisher of articles on Spanish and Latin American literature in scholarly journals. He was awarded a Ford grant, 1969-70; Lilly and Mellon faculty development grant 1978, and was recipient of the Christian R. and F. Lindback Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award, 1981 and is listed in Marquis "Who's Who in America." He retired from Dickinson College in 1998.
Arturo loved art, literature, movies, music, and philosophy. He traveled extensively, first with Rosa, until her death in 1998, later in organized groups, and finally with his second wife Carol Ebersol Fox, whom he married in 2003. All told he covered all of western and eastern Europe, the near and far east, several northern African nations, and much of Latin America.
He struggled with failing health in his last years but always appreciated the professionalism and support he received from the staff at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he lived. He was especially grateful to Dr. Michael Gawlas, nurse manager Kathy Bixler, social worker Kathy Myers and all of the other nurse and nurse aide staff.
He is survived by his children Franz and wife Kathi Fox of Lancaster, daughter Alexandra Dotson of Lancaster, granddaughter Amanda Fox and her husband Ben of Mechanicsburg, granddaughter Olivia Dotson of Lancaster, stepdaughter Lauren Klein and husband Nicolas Clerno of Paris, France, step granddaughter Giulia Clerno of Paris, France and step daughter-in-law, Stacy S.
