Arlene Guerriero

December 9, 1936 — May 3, 2018

Arlene Hammann Guerriero, age 81, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Cumberland Crossing Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in Carlisle, December 1936 to the late Earl and Mabel Hammann.

Arlene was a 1954 honor graduate of Boiling Springs High School where she enjoyed sports including playing on the girls’ basketball team as well as other events such as being a member of the May Day Queens Court.

As an honor student of the Lock Haven State Teacher’s College class of 1958, she met her future husband Carl while she was serving on the college’s Homecoming Queen’s court. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and the Pi Kappa Sigma College Sorority. Continuing her education, she received a Master’s Degree at Penn State in 1962.

As a mathematics teacher in Carlisle School District for 35 years, she loved her job and her junior high school students.

Arlene was a very social person. She was an active member in both the League of Women Voters and First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle. Her favorite activities included reading, playing bridge, sewing, needlepoint, knitting many sweaters for her husband, daughter and herself, and making dozens of Teddy Bears for babies of friends and relatives.

Arlene also enjoyed the family sports car hobby. She drove one to work every day and attended many car events. At one event she was named “Thunderbird Queen” by the Classic Thunderbird Club.

Travel was also on her list of things to do, traveling to the Far East countries, Scandinavian Countries and Down Under Countries.

Arlene is survived by her husband of 61 years, Carl “Skip”; daughter Anne Mary Epstein and her husband Darin; granddaughters Caroline and Alexandra Epstein; and brothers Richard, Robert and William Hammann; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Carol Gilkeson and D. Jean Line.

A memorial service for Arlene will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Cumberland Crossing Nursing Home, 1 Longsdorf Way, Carlisle. Burial will be private and will take place at the discretion of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Arlene’s honor to First Presbyterian Church, 2A N. Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.
