Allan R. Williams

Allan Williams, 87, of Carlisle, met his maker in heaven on Sunday, July 3, 2016 with his family by his side.
He was born in Cumberland, MD and attended Allegheny High School where he excelled at track and field sports and played saxophone in a night club dance band. He graduated from Frostburg State College with a BA degree in Education and then completed graduate studies at The Pennsylvania State University in Geography and Geology. At Penn State University he met his wife Mary Ellen Mood. They were married in 1956 for 60 years, raising a family with two sons, Gregory and Douglas.
They resided for 43 years in the Shippensburg area on a small farm located on the Ritner Highway. They renovated a circa 1790 stone tavern and became innkeepers welcoming guests to the Field & Pine Bed & Breakfast for 20 years. In 2014, they moved to Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community.
Allan's career specialized in the field of Economic and Industrial Development. He began his career first with the C & O Railroad, where he surveyed train routes then served as Executive Vice President for the PA Development and Credit Corporation where he financed and developed numerous small and large businesses across Pennsylvania.
He served in the US Army Reserves for 37 years in the Corps of Engineers, as an Intelligence Officer, and finally as an Attaché Officer to the Swiss Embassy.
He unselfishly volunteered his time for the benefit of numerous organizations including the Shippensburg Chamber of Commerce, as a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 174, board member for Rails to Trails, as Treasurer for the Newville Lions Club, Carlisle Exchange Club, Military Officers Association (MOAA), Shippensburg Rotary club and the Newville Masons.
He served for 18 years on the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission which advocates for responsible development of Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry counties. Since 1998 he was Associate Director for the Cumberland County Conservation District.
An active member of Second Presbyterian Church of Carlisle, for 36 years, he served as Trustee, Elder, and chaired the Church Grounds Committee and 2016 Nominating Committee.
Allan loved family camping, music, tennis, gardening, and birding. He always had a joke or two.
He is survived by Mary Ellen, his wife of 60 years, sons Gregory Williams and wife Mary Kay (Tomchick) Williams of State College, PA, Douglas Williams and wife Robin (Rowe) Williams and grandchildren Ava and Evan Williams of Towson, MD. He also has two surviving brothers, Gary Williams and wife Shala of Waterford, VA and Steve Kornblatt and wife Ann, of Bethesda, MD and sister in law Jean Mood, of Doylestown, PA, and brother in law Samual Mood, of Milleville, DE.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection is planned for 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2016 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013 with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey W. Gilbelius and Rev. Jennifer L. McKenna co-officiating. A private interment will be in the church memorial gardens. A visitation will follow the service with a repast and luncheon in the church rotunda.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Second Presbyterian Church Grounds Beatification Committee.
