William Niesley Wenger, 87, went to be with his Lord on February 16, 2013.
Born August 18,1925 in Carlisle, he was the son of the late Roy H. and Ruth Niesley Wenger. William grew up in downtown Carlisle, in an apartment above his grandfather Niesley's shoe store. His parents started their own business which became known as "Wenger's", a ladies apparel shop. William became co-owner of "Wenger's" in 1950 and upon his parent's retirement, he took over full ownership in 1961. After selling "Wenger's" he and his two sons bought the Carlisle Food Locker, Inc., which became the present Wenger Meats and Ice.
William was a member of Grace Baptist Church where he served for many years as an elder as well as director of the music program. He shared his love for music by conducting the choir and singing solos and duets.
William graduated from Goshen College, IN and Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary, PA. He taught music for two years at Upland College, Upland, CA before returning to Carlisle. He served many years as a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Carlisle Chamber of Commerce.
Louise Hartzler Wenger, his wife of 63 years survives him. They had five children, four of whom survive, Barbara Hinderland of Queens Creek, AZ, Blenda Wenger of Carlisle, Bradford and wife Mindy of Carlisle and Elizabeth Philbrick and husband Kemuel of Rochester, MN. William was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Wenger Hatfield, son William N. Wenger, Jr., two grandsons, Bradford H. Wenger, Jr. and Jason William Wenger and 1 great granddaughter, Emma Grace Owens. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM at Grace Baptist Church, 777 West North Street, Carlisle, on Saturday, February 23, 2013 with Rev. David Campbell and Rev. Walter Chantry officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle. There will be a time of visitation at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, February, 22 and from 9:00 AM until the time of the service on Saturday at the church.
